About the design
Everyone knows the lion before they've ever seen one. The reputation arrived first: mane, roar, throne, none of it earned on site. It sleeps twenty hours a day. The females do most of the hunting while the reputation naps in the shade and takes the credit anyway.
They say a lion's roar carries five miles across open ground, loud enough to rearrange the order of things without a single claw drawn. Mostly, it works. Here it's rendered in cold moonlight, white and ash grey and pale ice blue against near-black, gritty and hard-edged like old airbrush work, howling at the moon as straight-faced as anything with a mane has ever done. Wear the reputation. You didn't do the work either.
