About the design
The axolotl never finishes growing up. It reaches full adulthood without shedding its larval body — feathery gills, a flat tail, a grin that never closes. Other salamanders drop all that and walk onto land. The axolotl looks at the deal and stays in the water.
It looks too soft to survive anything, but it regrows legs, jaws, and damaged parts of its own heart and brain without scarring. The Aztecs named it for Xolotl, the god who dodged sacrifice by turning into a salamander and hiding in the water. Supposedly the axolotl still remembers the trick. Refusing to grow up was never a delay — it was the exit. You don't leave the getaway car once it starts working.
